Barn Sale and More!

As the temperatures cool off around here, so do the number of sales; however, I was pleased to attend my first barn sale last weekend. Things were a little pricey for resell but I did manage to find a few things there and at a couple of yard sales being held nearby.

One vendor had several old doorknobs, so I bargained for these…..

I bought a blue Cameoware (Harker China) serving bowl and a brown Monmouth mixing bowl….

The pink child’s mug is another piece of Cameoware. A perky pixie perches on a small Shawnee planter and Smiley (also Shawnee) is an orphan salt/pepper shaker that I couldn’t leave behind….

Of course, it’s always a good day when I find Pyrex….

Our Christmas Open House is quickly approaching and my office is stacked with projects and boxes of items that will be displayed soon. For example, this sweet bottlebrush tree was bought without a base; so I upcycled an old spool to accommodate it. It’s pictured with a vintage Santa that I found recently.

Finally, I wanted to show you the “before” and “after” of a project I just finished.

I found this small chest of drawers (think large jewelry box) a few months ago. I’m from the Magnolia State, but the painted magnolias really did not appeal to me. The chest had good bones, as they say, so I bought it and put it in the garage until I found some inspiration for its make-over.

Well, it sat there…..

And sat there….

And finally inspiration came in the form of some old yardsticks and now…….

She measures up!

Well, Bowl Me Over!

When Mom and I go to local estate sales, we expect to find the usual vintage china, like this old platter…..

15" platter by Owen China

There’s always kitchenware to choose from……

McCoy butter dish, F. Stewart pottery pitcher, sugar server

Vintage linen is usually available…..

Jean d'Orly hankie, Christmas tree hand towel, embroidered hand towel

Even old Polaroid cameras are fairly easy to find……

I found all of the above at a recent sale. Good finds, but nothing particular unusual. What I found next, though, was a first for me……

Yep, an old Brunswick bowling pin...

Call me crazy, but I had to buy it!

Storage Unit Sale

Hubby and I went out of town a few days ago to visit relatives. Of course, I checked estatesales.net before we left and found an interesting vintage sale close to our destination. When we arrived at the sale address, we were surprised to find that the location was a storage facility. The sellers explained that the contents of an old Victorian house had to be moved to the storage unit and the sale was being conducted there because the house had been sold.

I quickly amassed a small stack of unique items. Here’s what I found….

A large oval cream/green enamelware pan and two large bed springs…..

An old blue batter bowl and a gingham check apron….

A colorful vintage tablecloth and a cute little wooden crate…..

A great stack of old sewing machine drawers…..

And, finally, a large yellow/brown spatter footed enamelware bowl…

I did my “happy dance” as we left the sale!

Country Estate Sale

Country estate sales are usually lots of fun, so Mom and I took advantage of the opportunity to attend one a couple of weekends ago. Mom likes to look at the scenery on the way, but she has to look quickly because I can’t wait to look at the vintage treasures once we get to the sale!

It wouldn’t be a country sale without a quilt so I bought one, along with an old Belber suitcase…..

This miniature brass oil lamp…..

has its own holder so one could carry it from place to place safely….

La Solana pottery comes in several matte glazes, but the soft turquoise always catches my eye. I was excited to find a bowl, mug and salt-pepper set….

The country kitchen was a treasure trove of goodies. I found a Pyrex divided casserole, a Mrs. Smith’s Mello-Rich pie plate, a Foley tin reamer, 2 tin measuring spoon sets and 2 green-handled cookie cutters…..

More kitchen utensils…. 3 graters, tin measuring cup and scoop…

Since Christmas is all but here (actually it has already arrived at the big retail stores) I spotted a 1947 Christmas annual that contains beautiful graphics. Take a look….

Don’t you just love country estate sales?
