A mug and bowl for small hands…..

Two ceramic boxes for small treasures…..

A small Beatrix Potter figurine for owl lovers….

A basket for small change…..

And a 2-1/4" tall compote just for fun…..

Tangerine Deja Vu

Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2012 is Tangerine Tango. You see it everywhere....in clothes and accessories and in the latest home furnishings.

JCP catalog

But I get a sense of déjà vu when I see tangerine!
Haven’t we seen that color before?
Like maybe 40 years ago?

Remember this set of vintage canisters that I refurbished a few months ago. I would date them somewhere around 1972. Doesn’t that color look very familiar? It looks like tangerine to me!

Well that got me thinking….and looking through my stash of vintage items….looking for other items in tangerine……and look at all I found….

Limoges plate

Czech glass plate/compote

Vintage tablecloth

Shawnee creamer, Tupperware container, Federal nut grinder,
Vintage linens

Vintage tray

And look at the beautiful tangerine flowers in this vintage Lefton pitcher that my friend Donna from Conghaile Cottage sent me....

They say that what goes around comes around!
Are you experiencing a little Tangerine deja vu?

A Rare Recommendation

I like "old school" things (betcha woulda never guessed that!) but we do live in the 21st century and occasionally I find something "new-fangled" that I like, especially if it helps me take care of my "old-fangled" treasures. That was the case when I happened upon this very handy Dish Drying Mat at Bed, Bath & Beyond.

When I get home from a productive treasure-hunt, I usually have several pieces of kitchen glassware or china that need a good bath. A dishwasher is very harsh on vintage pieces like colored Pyrex and jelly glasses with printed graphics so I prefer to hand-wash. After washing, I would place them to dry on a dishtowel laid on the kitchen counter.

I've discovered that the Drying Mat works much better than a dishtowel. It soaks up the water so that the counter doesn't get as wet and it also cushions the glassware. The mat drys quickly after use and can even be machine washed if soiled. Mats are available in several sizes and all cost under $10.

By the way, this is a non-solicited recommendation. I really like this product and, in case you haven't seen or used one, I thought you might like a little help in taking care of your own vintage glassware.

Cherish your treasures!

"Shabby" Mirror

Thirty years ago, I would have called this little mirror “shabby”….

Pretty sad, huh?
Dull, depressing, unwanted...but I bought it at a yard sale anyway.

I added paint, distressed it and applied some pretty roses……

Now I can say that it’s REALLY “shabby” !!!

Rainy Weekend Finds

Rain threatened…and made good on those threats…all weekend; however, Mom and I aren’t the kind to let a few raindrops deter us from a good treasure-hunt. We put on our rainy day shoes and trudged through muddy puddles to uncover some goodies.

It was cloudy, but not raining, on Friday morning and we found…..

A couple of old Coca-Cola crates…..

A Baret Ware metal tray made in England…..

A pair of framed butterfly pictures, a Star of David trinket box and a small owl-shaped box.

It was raining on Saturday morning, but there were a couple of advertised sales we wanted to check out. We were happy to find that they weren’t cancelled and brought home….

A vintage Belber suitcase...

Several boxes that originally held typewriter ribbons (the bottom one is full of old match books)...

And an old school chair from a local elementary school…..

My “assistant” gave her approval.....!

Did you “yard sale” in the rain?

Cigar Box Purse

A few weeks ago, I showed you a stash of wooden cigar boxes that Mom and I found at an estate sale.

A couple of you commented that you also had some boxes and wondered what to do with them. Well, let me tell you the rest of the story about those cigar boxes. I actually bought a brown paper bag full of wooden cigar boxes plus some extra goodies.

Along with the boxes there were two containers of beads and several pieces of felt AND…....a purse made from one of the cigar boxes!!!

inside view

The lady at the estate sale said she planned to make purses from all the cigar boxes, but had only finished one and lost interest.

I plan to sell the completed cigar box purse, but I’ll leave the purse-making to someone else. The extra cigar boxes will be sold as is for someone to use as they please. However, I did like the purse idea and I thought maybe this would give you an idea for how to repurpose your cigar boxes.

Unadvertised Thrill!

Mom and I set out early Friday morning to attend an estate sale that had been advertised on estatesales.net. The pictures posted on the website showed only a few things that looked interesting, but I’ve learned that not everything is shown in the photos. We looked through elegant glassware, pots and pans, lots of crochet thread and tables of Christmas items, but I walked away with…..

A handled white wicker tray, a jadeite-colored apron and a Japanese porcelain bowl,

A vintage juicer and 2 crocheted potholders,

Two pretty Copley bird figurines and a cross-stitched tablecloth.

We stopped at a couple of yard sales that were advertised in the local papers. Though we didn’t find much, but we did discover this large 39” x 19” framed needlepoint tapestry. The work is beautiful!

But the thrill of the day came when we turned to head home and saw signs for an estate/moving sale. This one had not been advertised in the papers or online. We stopped....nothing was priced…you just picked out what you wanted to buy and a sweet older gentleman gave you a very reasonable price. I went straight to the small kitchen and picked out a few things. When I opened a bottom cabinet and my heart stood still…a Pyrex bowl! I moved a few things around and found two more Pyrex bowls. To be exact, I found three nesting Snowflake Blue mixing bowls!

What a thrill!!!
