Shopping by the Decade

Do you seem to favor a particular decade (or two) when you shop for vintage goodies? “They” say that we usually prefer items from our parents’ decade (when we were kids) and our grandparents’ decade (when our parents were kids). For myself, I think that holds pretty true. I was a young adult in the 1970s, but items from the 30s, 40s and 50s really appeal most to me.

With all that said, it’s very hard from me to buy (or re-buy) items from the 60s and 70s. Avocado green, harvest gold, flower power, owls, butterflies and mushrooms ….. I threw all that stuff away years ago!  All but the music, that is. 70s music is still my favorite!!!

Still, I want to satisfy my customers’ tastes and wants and lately they have been asking for owls ……. pictures, figurines, salt and pepper shakers, anything "owl."

So even though I picked this guy up and put him back down three times before finally deciding I had to buy him (for my customers, of course) this 18” long macramé owl came home with me. Heck, I could have made this thing back in the day. I learned how to macramé in the 70s! Remember all those macramé plant hangers?!!

I just had to show him to you before I take him to the Antique Mall. I actually think he’s pretty cute, but I do hope that one of my customers still wants an owl.

He would be perfect for Halloween, don’t you think?

Do you prefer items from a certain decade?

  1. Hi Sherry :) I also love the 70's era of design. I've got a few owl pieces we have collected and really enjoy. I like the macrame piece you picked up....somebody will buy him for sure.

  2. I like items from the '70's. But the era for clothes is the '60's.
    The owl is very cute.

  3. That owl is so precious. I remember my mom going crazy with macrame in the early 70's; maybe she made that owl. I like anything from the early 60's and earlier. I'm with you, I just can't seem to cozy up to stuff I threw out a long time ago....it's all coming back around now.

  4. unfortunately, I love all the decades!! I can remember wishing I knew how to make these owls. I had a friend who's mom made macrame things, and I always wanted to learn, but never did!! Love your owl....brings back a lot of memories!! Happy VTT!

  5. I am right there with you, 30's, 40's and 50's. love the graphics, the depression ware and the kitchen ware. I still have my avacodo green pyrex bowls I got for a wedding present in 1980, use them every day! But the 70's stuff...not into it!

  7. Well I was born in the 80's, but the only thing I like about those years is the clothing styles & the music.

I tend to like much older stuff that was around when my grandma was a little girl. I do love the 30's, 40's & 50's also. I tend to consider that the "vintage era".

That owl is really cute & I think my mom still has a spider plant hanging in a macramé holder ha ha.

  9. I'm more about the 40s and 50s even though I was born after those decades. The 70s, eh, not so much...but the owl is pretty darn cute.

  20. I did my share of macrame in the 70's too. I remember a belt that I made, and yes, I thought I was pretty groovy :)
I love things from the 20's/30's/40's...I'm not much into the decor of the 70's. Reminds me too much of the Brady Bunch.

  22. Thanks for the roadtrip back home. When I first got married in the 70's my sister and I took a macrame class at a local high school. We made so much stuff, the only thing left is the easter baster my sister macramade when I had my daughter. I love the owl, my other sister has a love for owls.
    Happy Fall
    Hugs,

  23. In the late 60's early 70's (and beyond) one of my aunts collected all kinds of owls (it was a bit creepy). I didn't get this 'bird love.' I was 10-ish and my understanding of collections went as far as books, crayons and Barbie. I love things from the 30's, 40's & 50's. No that's not true - I like all kinds of things from any time period.

  24. I think the era I seem to be drawn to is the 1950's and very early 1960's. So, how are you going to deck out your Mr. Owl for the season? Thank you for joining TTF. Have a wonderful weekend.
