Is It Aqua or Turquoise?

We all love that bluish-green color that adorns so many vintage items; but, I’m always torn between calling it aqua or turquoise. Perhaps one name is correct and the other is wrong or maybe they are synonymous?!? Oh, you call it robin’s egg blue? Well, whatever your preference, I found several items this weekend in “that color”!!!

This bowl took a little research because it isn’t marked. I finally discovered it in my Hazel-Atlas book. It is a 7” mixing bowl in the “Kitchen Utensils” pattern. Mine has an inverted scalloped design on the edge, others bowls in the same pattern has a rolled edge.

Federal Glass made this little 6”mixing bowl. It is marked with their “F in a shield” and is in the “Kitchen Aids” pattern.

I also found a Lustro-Ware scoop and a melamine butter dish and lid.

But my best find, by far, was this great Pantry Queen trash can. It stands 15-1/2” tall and the flip top works great. It even has its original plastic liner.

This pic shows the truest color.

I need to tag the trash can before I take it to my booth, but I have one problem…..

Do I call it aqua or turquoise?

  3. You always manage to discover the best treasures, Sherry! I love it when vintage finds are not only great looking, but useful, too! And I know just what you mean about aqua and turquoise! I'd say turquoise for your latest finds, and your great trash can and butter dish look more blue, on my monitor, anyway!

  5. not robin's egg blue...that is another post and very subtle yet vibrant colour. As well as 'periwinkle' blue.

  6. I think turqouise and it's beautiful! This vintage tableware is gorgeous. I think that the bowls and the baskets are adorable! Gorgeous finds. Hugs. FABBY

  7. We call it divine! I'd say aqua, that sounds 50s to me. Turquoise sounds 70s. But that's just me, a bit of an aqua-diva.

  8. The darker shade is turquoise to me -- maybe the lighter is aqua? My aunt had a turquoise kitchen in the 60's -- before that, her kitchen was pink! (it's still turquoise -- she and her kitchen are vintage) Whatever, your finds are great!!

  9. I'm with Deb, turquoise for the darker stuff, and aqua for the lighter blue, although aqua tends to have a little green in it.

Potayto, Potaato, it's all good looking stuff!

  18. These are great finds - love them all. I'm going to confuse matters by saying I usually say turquoise rather than aqua (unless it's duck egg blue!) ;-)

  23. Too bad I don't live in Mississippi, because I'd drop in for that trash can for sure! And I think you'd be fine with either aqua or turquoise :)

  24. Great finds! I agree the trashcan is the cherry on top! I think that turquoise is darker & aqua is lighter so I think you have a bit of both! Enjoy everything.

  30. OK, the "authorities" state that AQUA is bluish-green and TURQUOISE is greenish-blue. But, I've actually seen vintage items named by the makers in the reverse. So who knows for sure? ;)

Regardless, your items are really great!

  31. Oh I love the trash can! As for the colors, one book says aqua the others say turquoise for identical items. It's a wash.
